Iris for YouTube ("Iris") is a Firefox add-on for sending YouTube videos to friends. This page explains what Iris stores, who can see it, and how to delete it.
What's stored
When you sign in, Iris stores:
- Your Google name, email address and profile picture, received through Google sign-in.
- The handle you choose.
- Your friends and friend requests.
- Shares you send: the video ID, title, channel name and channel picture, the start time, and an optional note of up to 140 characters.
- When you watched Shares sent to you.
- When you last viewed your Inbox and Friends tabs, so Iris knows what's new.
Your browser's add-on storage also keeps your sign-in session and a few hours' cache of video stats. These never leave your browser except to sign you in.
What's seen and not seen
- Iris only learns about a YouTube video you open if someone has sent it to you and you haven't watched it yet. The rest of your viewing history never leaves your browser.
- Only you can see what you've watched. Iris has no read receipts, so friends are never told whether you watched what they sent.
- Friends see your name, handle, picture and the Shares you send them.
- Other Iris users can find you only by typing your exact handle.
Who processes it
- Supabase hosts Iris's database and handles sign-in sessions.
- Google provides sign-in.
- YouTube: video titles, channel details, thumbnails and view stats are fetched directly from YouTube by your browser, just like visiting YouTube.
Iris has no analytics and no ads, and never sells or shares your data with anyone else.
Retention and deletion
- Your data is kept until you delete your account.
- "Delete Iris account" in the Iris account menu deletes everything immediately, including Shares you sent that are still in friends' Inboxes.
- If you've already uninstalled Iris, email nick.gilliam2@gmail.com from the Google account you signed in with, and your account will be deleted.
